Introduction

Adolescence is a time of adjustment and progression. During this stage of development it is customary for adolescents to want to have romantic relationships. They will develop new feelings, which may include bewilderment, confusion, and increased vulnerability. Unfortunately, ambiguity about relationships could lead to negative consequences for them. Consider these facts:

  • About one-tenth of high school students experience a physically abusive relationship.

  • Almost 50 percent of high school students have reported they were involved in some form of dating violence.

  • Adolescents of all races, economic, and ethnic groups can experience relationship violence.
